Vietnam (Viet Nam) : Viet Nam: Ecotourism, Fair Trade and Sustainable Economies
February 14, 2009
- February 27, 2009
Eco-tourism in Viet Nam is a relatively new concept and is not yet fully realized. Remote provinces exist that remain largely isolated from the outside world, unexplored save by the ethnic groups who inhabit them.
Global Exchange is excited to offer a unique journey this February to Ha Giang province, situated in the far Northeast corner of Viet Nam and along the Chinese border. Ha Giang is not accessible by rail or air, and due to rough and unpaved roads was--until recently--visited by only the most intrepid motorbiking adventurers. Global Exchange's delegation will travel to Ha Giang by 4 wheel-drive vehicle, with a stopover in neighboring Tuyen Quang province at the organic farm run by Berkeley agriculturist John Berlow. At the farm, delegates will participate in the activity of a working organic farm while learning about deforestation and replanting. Delegates will have the opportunity to volunteer at the farm's replanting project, which has the stated goal of planting three million trees in Viet Nam; roughly the number Vietnamese who died in the 'American War'.
From Tuyen Quang, delegates will continue into Ha Giang; trekking to villages within the Ha Gian valley to spend a few days learning about local culture, textile cooperative production, and a way of life that is rapidly being overtaken by modernization. Weather conditions permitting, we may trek into the rainforest to catch a glimpse of elusive snub nosed monkeys, one of the 10 most endangered primates in the world.
